Ritual of Presence
Together with artist and tea maker Samm Lewis, I am developing a new installation entitled 'Ritual Of Presence'. An installation in which time can slow down and space becomes intangible. Inspired by the workings of evolution and the invisible entanglement that connects us all. Visitors can enter a meditative state by drinking tea and undergoing the ritual that accompanies it.
Organically shaped teacups are equipped with sensors that measure touch and temperature, mapping the collective vibe of the visitors. This data is used to manipulate the live-generated images that are projected onto the double layer of transparent fabric that surrounds the space. The AI-generated images seem to develop into something, but remain elusive. Just as in the workings of evolution, there is no beginning and no end, only process.
Conceptually, the project challenges dominant narratives around AI and interaction, replacing stimulation with subtlety, and performance with patience. It addresses contemporary issues: the impact of acceleration culture, the erosion of shared time, and the need for sacred spaces. Technically, it blends traditional craft with generative algorithms and custom sensing systems, creating a deeply hybrid form.
